Solutions & Answers For Small Electrical Problems

Please reach us at info@onelcon.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

There may be a couple of reasons for power outage or electrical cut off in whole property. Below listed items should be checked in order one by one.

  1.  Is the main cut-out fuse blown? If your electricity meter lights are off, this might indicate a blown fuse or a power cut from the grid.
  2. Is the main isolator switched off? It’s typically the first switch on the right-hand or left-hand side.
  3. Is the main RCD tripped? In some properties, the main RCD acts as the main isolator and might have tripped due to a fault.

If your socket outlets aren’t working, follow these steps:

  • Has the RCD tripped? The RCD might trip due to a fault in the circuit.
  • Is the related circuit breaker, MCB, RCBO, or AFDD tripped? Check your fuse box for any tripped devices and reset if safe to do so.

Here are the potential reasons if your lights are off:

  • Has the RCD tripped? This can cut power to lighting circuits.
  • Is the related circuit breaker, MCB, RCBO, or AFDD tripped? These protective devices may have tripped due to a fault in the circuit.

If your RCD won’t stay on after resetting, this could indicate one of two electrical faults:

  • Short Circuit: A short circuit might be present somewhere in the electrical system.
  • Earth Leakage Current: The RCD monitors current flow from line to neutral, and any imbalance suggests a current leak, which can be hazardous.
  • What action should I take? Leave the RCD off and contact a qualified electrician immediately. Trying to reset it repeatedly could be dangerous.

  •  Why does an RCD trip? An RCD trips when there is a discrepancy between the current entering and exiting the circuit, suggesting leakage.
  • Where does this leakage go? Leakage current can flow over humans, animals, or into the ground, which poses serious safety risks.
  • How does an RCD function? It measures current flow between the live and neutral wires. If there's a difference, the RCD disconnects the power to protect against electric shock.

  •  What are the signs to call an electrician? Call an electrician if:
    • You experience repeated RCD tripping.
    • You suspect a short circuit or earth leakage.
    • You have any electrical issues you’re unsure how to safely address.
  • Why not fix it yourself? Electrical repairs should only be handled by professionals to prevent personal injury and property damage.
